The Metro New York chapter, which serves the five boroughs of New York City and Nassau County , Long Island began in 1983 and is headquartered in Lake Success with a field office in Manhattan. Since its founding, the Metro New York chapter has granted over 7,500 wishes. In Fiscal Year 2009 we touched the lives of 766 wish children and their families by granting 510 wishes for local children, and by facilitating 256 wish assists for children who reside in other areas, but whose wishes took place in New York - that’s one wish every 11 hours, making Metro New York one of the most active chapters in the national network of 65 Make-A-Wish® chapters across the country.

The Metro New York chapter, which serves the five boroughs of New York City and Nassau County, Long Island, began in 1983 when 13 volunteers joined together to grant the wish of 7-year-old Steven, whose heartfelt wish was to meet Daisy Duke (actress Catherine Bach) of the popular “Dukes of Hazzard” television show. Ms. Bach’s visit to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center was contagious… a new local chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation was born based in Lake Success, Long Island with a field office in Manhattan.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation traces its beginning to one boy’s wish. In 1980, 7-year-old Christopher James Greicius was being treated for leukemia. Every day, he dreamed of becoming a police officer. Thanks to the generosity of some caring individuals, Chris was sworn in as the first honorary DPS patrolman in state history. Thus, the Chris Greicius Make-A-Wish Memorial – which later became known as the Make-A-Wish Foundation was born.
According to its fiscal year 2008 audit results, the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Metro New York spent an astounding 81% of its revenue on wish granting and related program expenses. Only 9% was spent on management and general costs and 10% was allocated to fundraising.
