Ways
to Volunteer

Nearly
700 specially trained volunteers generously give their
time and energy to Share the Power of a Wish®.
Our
volunteers become involved in the mission through a
variety
of capacities.
Office
Volunteer
Come and join our
volunteer team at WishQuarters – the place where wishes come true. The
Foundation needs caring dedicated volunteers who are interested in volunteering
in our Long Island and Manhattan Offices. Whether you are interested in
marketing, accounting, outreach, writing, administration, volunteerism,
wish granting, or want to try it all…we have a volunteer position for
you! Training is provided on site for all positions.
Speakers
Bureau Volunteer
If you love public
speaking, this is the volunteer role for you! You can help make wishes
come true by introducing the public to the Make-A-Wish Foundation and
the work that we do. Whether it's a ten minute talk to a local club, a
check presentation to a group of school children, or manning a table at
a workplace-giving fair; you can be the face and voice of the Foundation.
If you have a flexible daytime schedule, your help is needed year-round
to give presentations to various constituencies. Training is provided.
Community
Outreach Volunteer
If
you enjoy going out into the community, making presentations, and spreading
the word of the Make-A-Wish® mission, this is the volunteer role for
you! This volunteer position helps to educate the public about the Foundation
and the many ways they can become involved. This volunteer team attends
meetings and fairs, makes presentations to community groups and hospital
personnel, and conducts Internet research. If you have a flexible daytime
schedule you are needed year-round for this position. Training is provided.
Wish-granting
Volunteer
As a Wish-granting
Volunteer, you will experience the magic that occurs when a child is permitted
to dream…. dream of a world where they can visit their favorite theme
park and ride all of the best rides, reach out and hug their favorite
celebrity, stockpile all of the toys they have ever imagined into a waiting
limousine, or be a firefighter for a day.
As a Wish-granting
Volunteer, you will be paired up in teams of two to interview children
to determine their heartfelt wish. You will assist in the granting of
each wish with Make-A-Wish staff and your volunteer partner.
A minimum commitment
of four wishes per year in two boroughs/counties is required for this
volunteer position. In order to arrange wish interviews, your ability
to navigate the metro area by subway, bus, or car is imperative. A two-night
training session is required.
Wish Assist Phone Greeter
The opportunity
to make an impact in the life of a child is only a phone call away! You
can become part of the magic of a wish experience for hundreds of children
from all over the world as they come to New York to have their heartfelt
wishes fulfilled. As a Wish Assist Greeter you will be the friendly voice
for children and their families visiting the Big Apple.
Volunteers introduce
our wish families to New York by making a few phone calls to check in,
reviewing itineraries, and answering any questions the family may have
about their visit. Daytime availability and a telephone are all you need.
A one-night training session is required.
Special
Events
Help the Foundation
in one of our most successful forms of fund raising. Volunteer roles vary
from set-up, registration, check-in, raffle sales, clean-up and more!
While the majority of our events are held in Manhattan there are still
smaller events throughout the Metropolitan area where your help is needed.
Our events our scheduled with plenty of notice for you to sign up and
add to your schedule! A one-night training session is required.
Wish
Story Volunteer
Do you enjoy creative
writing? Are you searching for a rewarding volunteer opportunity you can
complete from the comfort of your own home or office, on your own schedule?
As a Wish Story Volunteer, you will call families after
the wish has been completed for evaluation and story telling purposes.
During your conversations with the wish families, you will gather magical
details about the wish experience and craft captivating stories. The Foundation
will utilize the stories you create in many significant ways: recognizing
donors who sponsor a wish, highlighting wishes on our Web site, and marketing
to thousands of potential donors.
