has a true passion and talent for dance. Dancing has been the key to forgetting about all of the difficult times she and her family have overcome during Yesenia’s illness and recovery from a liver transplant, and it brings everyone so much happiness.
When Yesenia’s wish-granting volunteers met this charming young lady, she and her adorable little sister Jessica leaped and twirled for them. We learned that Yesenia had taken lessons in flamenco, jazz, ballet and hip hop, and was even granted a scholarship over the summer. Her mom told us how dancing helps Yesenia be herself, and she just loves seeing her daughter express herself so boldly. Yesenia performed in a dance recital this year and her family was so proud that she danced so beautifully, knew all of the choreography and that all of her usual shyness was nowhere to be seen.
As much as Yesenia loves all forms of dance, tap dancing is what she really wanted to learn about and experience: “Tap is the best because your feet get so happy and crazy that they don’t want to stop!”
Her wish came true with a full year of dance lessons which she chose to take at the Bronx Dance Theater
right in her local community. Then the planning began for a shopping spree to select all the outfits and dance shoes she would need for her dream lessons. The exciting day began with a surprise limousine ride to the dance shop. She picked out many different styles and shades of leotards and tights, a dance bag to hold her supplies, and the most perfect pair of tap shoes (with a gift card for the next pair as she grows). Mom explained that Yesenia is self-conscious of the raised scar on her stomach, so the wonderful dance store owners helped her select beautiful wrap skirts to complete her outfits. She went on to select all-purpose hip hop shoes for general practicing, and then Yesenia sweetly treated her little sister to her very own pair of ballet shoes so they could share their love of dance together.
Yesenia has been happily enjoying her tap lessons and most special of all, Yesenia’s first lesson fell perfectly just as she celebrated her 9th birthday!
