Throughout the year, Make-A-Wish Metro New York and Western New York offers a variety of unpaid internships to provide opportunities for college students to receive academic credit and valuable work experience in the nonprofit field.
Our internship program aims to cultivate students from many fields and disciplines. We offer interns a substantive learning experience that affords them the opportunity to contribute to our work, and the knowledge, skills and tools they may need to continue in the nonprofit field.
Development interns contribute to numerous fundraising and donor relations initiatives within the different areas of development including internal and external events, annual giving, grants, and donor relations.
Responsibilities may include: attending and assisting with special events and community event, working with the development team to acknowledge donors through thank you letters and phone calls, packing and unpacking for events, making calls to past event attendees and inviting them to the event, researching new donor prospects, researching in-kind donations and outreach via phone and email, data entry, mailing (FedEx, UPS, USPS), filing (electronic and paper) and other event duties as assigned by development team.
Wish granting interns work directly with wish coordinators to coordinate the process of granting wishes. The Volunteer Support Intern will assist with all aspects of volunteer engagement.
Responsibilities may include: (Wish Granting) arranging for transportation, accommodations, medical equipment, and services for wish families, following up on liability forms, creating wish trip itineraries, and assisting other chapters; (Volunteer Support) recruitment, onboarding, assignment to wishes, managing volunteer files, processing applications, recognition and communicating with volunteers.
The Wish Alumni and Families Intern will work directly with the Manager, Wish Alumni and Brand + Communications staff to provide support across key organizational initiatives. This role is instrumental in building relationships with the wish alumni of the organization, as well as their families, in an effort to achieve the overarching goal of granting wishes to every eligible child.
Responsibilities may include: Making calls to children/families after wish experience is complete; making calls to past alumni and families to increase engagement; assisting team with capturing wish family data and entering information into Raisers Edge; writing and editing for internal and external audiences including interviewing wish kids/families to tell the story of their wish.
