Throughout the year, Make-A-Wish Metro New York and Western New York offers a variety of unpaid internships to provide opportunities for college students to receive academic credit and valuable work experience in the nonprofit field.
Our internship program aims to cultivate students from many fields and disciplines. We offer interns a substantive learning experience that affords them the opportunity to contribute to our work, and the knowledge, skills and tools they may need to continue in the nonprofit field.
Development interns contribute to numerous fundraising and donor relations initiatives within the different areas of development including internal and external events, annual giving, grants, and donor relations.
Responsibilities may include: attending and assisting with special events and community event, working with the development team to acknowledge donors through thank you letters and phone calls, packing and unpacking for events, making calls to past event attendees and inviting them to the event, researching new donor prospects, researching in-kind donations and outreach via phone and email, data entry, mailing (FedEx, UPS, USPS), filing (electronic and paper) and other event duties as assigned by development team.
Medical Outreach interns work directly with the Medical and Mission Delivery staff to provide support across key organizational initiatives. This role is instrumental in working with internal and external clients in an effort to achieve the overarching goal of granting wishes to every eligible child.
Responsibilities may include: supporting Associate and Manager with department functions regarding referrals, medical verification process, referrals, and travel authorization process; coordinating referral intake and qualification process; onboarding wish families with all necessary documents; collaborating with Mission Delivery team to support all communication with medical professionals and much more.
Operations interns will work directly with the process improvement manager and Mission Delivery staff to provide support across key organizational initiatives. The is the ideal job for someone looking into a career into Database Management and Business Insights and Analytics.
Responsibilities may include: providing administrative, project and Mission Delivery support based on determined need, delivering key insights and analysis to understand organizational risks and opportunities, helping to develop content for monthly and quarterly business reviews and meetings, coordinating weekly analytics and identify risk to plan, working collaboratively with team leads and staff to support operations related to volunteers, wish children, and families, database processing as needed (i.e. data entry, queries / exports), assisting with special projects and ad hoc analysis, and providing support to additional departments as needed.
Wish-granting interns work directly with wish coordinators to coordinate the process of granting wishes.
Responsibilities may include: arranging for transportation, accommodations, medical equipment, and services for wish families, following up on liability forms, creating wish trip itineraries, and assisting other chapters.
IT & Database Administration
Data Analyst interns work closely with the IT & Database Administration Manager on planning and designing our Data Quality Metrics.
Responsibilities may include: building queries to analyze existing data and generate insight; architect, implement, and deploy new database SOU’s and SOP’s; recommending data points for our Data Quality Metrics; supporting various database processes, including imports and exporting.
The Finance intern provides a full range of administrative support for the Make-A-Wish Finance staff.
Responsibilities may include: sorting and organizing receipts for reimbursement, filing and managing our Accounts Payable files and our Batch Donation Files.
