Instead of enjoying a regular high school experience and preparing to go off to college, she was instead in a hospital undergoing chemotherapy. After being referred to Make-A-Wish, Markayla was given the opportunity to do anything her heart desired. After a long and arduous year, she knew she wanted to experience life and other cultures outside of the United States. Travelling is something she had always dreamed about, so it was only natural that her one true wish was to go to London and Paris, both of which held a special place in her heart.
On the day of her wish, Markayla, her mother, and her sisters, were picked up by limousine at taken to the airport where they would fly out to London. After arriving in London in the early morning, Markayla and her family spent the day exploring famous sights and trying all the delicious food! After all their adventures in London it was time for them to take a high-speed train to their next destination, Paris. In Paris, Markayla spent the day exploring and experiencing new cultures and touring the Paris museums! She especially loved seeing and taking pictures at the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre!
Upon returning from their trip, Markayla’s mom had this to say, “My daughter cried. She was very emotional. The trip was very encouraging and uplifting for her. Make-A-Wish made her dream come true, and that is why she cried. Having a dream come true, especially after recently receiving dire news, I believe helped her focus on life..... fighting.... and becoming well!”
When a wish is granted: it replaces fear with confidence, sadness with joy, and anxiety with hope. Markayla’s wish to go to Europe coming true, showed her that she could literally take on the world.
