Children are excited to transform into their favorite superhero, princess, or movie character for one magical, fun-filled night.
Every day wish kids decide that their one true wish is to be transformed, to step into another’s shoes for one day. They wish to be a mermaid, to be a pilot, to be a gymnast – a child’s imagination is endless.
The first ever wish granted by Make-A-Wish was to be a police officer. Chris Greicius inspired it all in 1980 by wanting to be a superhero for a day. Nearly 40 years later, children from around the world still wish to be a first responder – the chance to put on a uniform, sound the siren, and be someone who’s brave even if they don’t always feel brave in the face of their challenges.
Each year, the FDNY and NYPD grant the wishes of children from here and from around the world who travel to New York for their one special wish. Each organization provides a world-class experience for these children, who in their darkest times are inspired by the brave men and women who keep our city safe each day. From wishes to be a FDNY firefighter, catch a bad guy with the NYPD, or meet the heroes of 9/11, these amazing men and women go above and beyond to provide a day that’s a celebrates a child’s strength, optimism and imagination.
This October, we express our deepest gratitude to our hometown heroes. We are privileged to call the FDNY and NYPD wish granters, not just one night each year but throughout the year. Thank you for all that you do each day to provide joy and healing to those children who need it most.
