For many families, a wish is not an end but a beginning. Ten years ago, amid the financial crisis, one company saw an opportunity to bring joy to their employees and business partners while giving the gift of hope to children with critical illnesses. Ten years later, this month, Zurich has raised nearly $2 million for Metro New York wish kids, all by creating a true holiday spirit.
Leading up to the 2008 recession, company holiday parties were large affairs. A year into the crisis, Zurich executives had the idea to not cancel their annual holiday party but instead, turn it into an annual fundraiser to benefit Make-A-Wish Metro New York. Zurich invited business partners and brokers to make a donation to support wishes in connection with attending the holiday party. Fast forward to 2019, the Zurich Holiday Wish Fund and party has created a culture of philanthropy at the time-honored holiday party, sparking similar fundraisers for other chapters across the country. But it all started with one idea, one beginning - to grant wishes in the season of giving.
Zurich’s instrumental support reaches beyond the holiday festivities. Employees host wish kids in their office each summer for wish send-offs, transforming the office into a wonderland for children who have fought through the darkest of times. Children who have wished to go to Hawaii, London, the Amalfi Coast and even, South Africa have been welcomed to their office, celebrated in fun and unique ways, a special enhancement to their wish.
Make-A-Wish is eternally grateful for the champion that wish kids have in Zurich. This week, Zurich will raise nearly a quarter of a million dollars in a single night, kicking off year-long support in all its forms. Champions for children with critical illnesses, proving that even in the darkest hours, hope and new beginnings are the greatest gifts of all.
