David wished to go to Hawaii

“ What was David’s favorite part of the trip, his best memory? “EVERYTHING!!!” ”

- ~David

Five-year-old David wished for a trip to Hawaii with his Mom and Dad “because we never took a real vacation.” He always expressed an interest in geography, and Hawaii was someplace the family often talked about seeing but never actually visited. David’s vacations up to that point had generally been to close-by destinations or visits to his grandparents. Now, with a brief break between David’s treatments for neuroblastoma, David and his parents were happy to escape the cold New York winter and enjoy some fun in the sun. Thanks to the team at Make-A-Wish®, the family had a vacation they will never forget.

David’s horizons expanded on his Hawaiian adventure, as did his palate. “I tried sugar cane!” he boasts. He also tasted fresh mango and freshly caught fish. David recalls that he loved going to a luau where, after watching the show, he even joined in the dancing. A trip to the aquarium allowed him to see more fish than he could ever have imagined. David and his parents were truly in paradise.

What was David’s favorite part of the trip, his best memory? “EVERYTHING!!!” comes the answer, without hesitation. He loved the hotel - and its pool - and its beach - and its cave waterslide. He loved the palm trees and coconuts everywhere in Hawaii. On a fishing excursion, David’s best catch was the whale sighting: “It was awesome. Over 100 whales swam by the boat!”

While the days of David’s family vacation were full, they were never busy. There was plenty of time for relaxation amidst all the activities. It was a perfect getaway for a child who truly deserved one. For the family, the fun extended past the actual time spent in Hawaii. One example, when David’s school recently had a Hawaiian shirt day, David was the only one to show up with an “official” shirt from the islands! David’s mom Laurie sums up her son’s wish experience: “We loved it. Everything was wonderful. It was a big trip, and it really opened all of our eyes to taking time off for vacations, time for each other. Thank you, Make-A-Wish!”
