Olivia is a little girl with a serious kidney condition. She was very ill when her mother told her that Make-A-Wish® could make her fondest wish come true. Just as soon as she was well enough, a trip to Walt Disney World® Resort was planned.
Olivia loves Disney characters and being at Walt Disney World®
Resort for her seventh birthday sounded perfect. The anticipation of the trip was amazing; the family had never before been on a “true, true vacation,” and this occasion was to be enjoyed and cherished by all.
The family stayed at Give Kids The World, a resort designed especially for children with medical needs. According to Olivia’s mom, there was a “nice bonding, understanding and comfort” among the families there and that they were “wowed every minute of every day.” With so many things to see and do, it was impossible not to have a great time. “We felt like celebrities,” says mom.
Olivia’s favorite part of the trip was the day of her seventh birthday. “It started when Mommy sang Happy Birthday,” she laughs. The birthday girl chose to spend her special day in the Magic Kingdom®. “I saw Anna. She is one of the sisters from Frozen. Then I met Elsa, the other sister,” Olivia exclaims. And then with a visit to Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, the magical beauty salon where little girls get princess makeovers, the young lady was transformed into a beautiful princess herself, receiving the “royal treatment.”
Visiting the other famous theme parks in Florida gave Olivia the chance see and do so many different things. At Sea World® she saw “big black whales that performed. And dolphins, too! Mommy and I got to touch them. Their skin was so soft,” she recalls with wonder. “And I went to Universal Studios® and rode the Minion Ride and I saw Shrek in 4D in seats that moved like a roller coaster!” she declares emphatically.
Because of the problems with her kidneys, Olivia’s body often retains water and swells. According to her mom, while in Disney World, “Olivia lost an amazing amount of water. We saw a face that we hadn’t seen in ten months. When her body is not so swollen, Olivia is a much happier and more playful little girl. We were wowed by the trip, but the best gift of all was seeing the happy Olivia that we know.”
Olivia’s parents were so pleased with the improvement in her health that they decided to drive to Florida again sometime soon to see whether being there makes a difference. Olivia says, “Mommy is trying to get me better. I think it’s helping."
